2 MB 22-Jan-2012
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

Author(s): Douglas, J. Moo
Module version: 1.0
Description:

New International Commentary New Testament (NICNT): Romans

Paul’s letter to the Romans has been called “the quintessence and perfection of saving doctrine.” Perhaps the most challenging and thoroughly doctrinal book of the entire New Testament, Romans deals with many issues that are basic to Christian theology and practice. In this volume respected New Testament scholar Douglas J. Moo provides a superb study of Paul’s letter to the Roman Christians and restates the enduring message of Romans for Christians today.

Based on the English text but bringing into the discussion the underlying Greek at every point, this commentary focuses both on theological meaning and on contemporary significance. Moo contributes to the continuing debate regarding Paul’s teaching on such issues as Jewish law and the relationship between Jews and Gentiles in the people of God. He also critically interacts with “the new perspective on Paul,” highlights Romans’s emphasis on “practical divinity,” and traces the theme of gospel throughout the epistle.

Twelve years in the making and a steady seller during its first decade in print, Moo’s Epistle to the Romans will continue to serve as a standard exposition of Romans.

Reviews

"No matter how full his library may be, nor how empty his pocket-book, the minister who sees this work will want it." — Observer.

"It promises to be the most useful cyclopedia for ministers issued as yet." — Christian.

"Every volume is profusely treated and explained verse by verse, with apposite, varied and suggestive extracts from a vast number of ancient and modern authors. The meaning of words, the lessons deducible from the text, the doctrine it teaches, the duty it enjoins, pithy remarks of commentators and other writers upon it, and anecdotes with which to enforce its teachings follow each verse. . . The author has put the condensed substance of many commentaries in one, giving the results reached by many learned experts." — Methodist Review.

"There is little or no exposition, properly so called, but an abun dant citation of the opinions of men called forth by the inspired writers. In this respect the book is unique." — Christian Intelligencer

"Mr. Exell here devotes more than 500 closely printed pages to one short epistle of six chapters. He has gathered together a vast quantity of sermonoutlines, anecdotes and illustrations of all kinds, intended to aid in the exposition of the Epistle to the Galatians. This kind of labour-saving apparatus ... is undoubtedly very popular at present, and, if wisely used, may be very serviceable, particularly to lay-preachers and Sunday-school teachers. If such work is to be attempted, it is at least carefully and well done by Mr. Exell. He has laid under contribution writers of all kinds, and inserts extracts of all sizes, sometimes consisting only of a line or two, sometimes extending to more than a page. The comments are judiciously chosen, generally from evangelical writers, and, for the most part, those of this century. There is a great mass of information in the volume on the letter to the Ephesians, which will be exceedingly useful to all who make it a foundation for personal research and study. The best commentaries and sermons on the epistle have been laid under contribution; anecdotes and illustrations culled from all sources are here ready to hand for the preacher and teacher. The work has been skilfully done, and, properly used, will be of great service." —London Quarterly Review

Terry, Bruce
Student's Guide to New Testament Textual Variants, A  (TCC)
1.1 MB 08-Apr-2010
Author(s): Terry, Bruce
Module version: 1.9
Description: A Student's Guide in Textual Criticism by Bruce Terry.
Variant Texts of the New testament are listed and compared and commented by Bruce Terry.

Preface
In 1984 while working on the third draft for the New Analytical Version, I realized that the average student of the Bible had no resource available to him to help him understand all the textual footnotes that are found in the several modern translations of the Bible. For those who read Greek, the United Bible Societies have published Bruce Metzger's excellent book, A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament. But for the person who does not read Greek, textual criticism is a mystery about which little has been written. To be sure, one cannot engage in textual criticism of the New Testament without a knowledge of Greek. But many aspects of this discipline can be understood by the average person even without a knowledge of Greek. It is for these people that this book is written. The textual footnotes of modern translations seem to follow no set pattern--one version may say that a reading is found in late manuscripts while another version says that the same reading is found in early manuscripts. In this book the reader can find more information on the subject. Indeed, in this volume he can begin to see for himself the fallacy of two modern myths of textual criticism: the constant superiority of the "best and most reliable witnesses" and the constant superiority of the majority of the manuscripts. Perhaps if for the common man this volume sheds a little light on a difficult subject so that he understands that there is no simple answer, this work will have filled a purpose. Hopefully this book will not breed more controversy, but will bring more understanding that will help to calm the spirit of controversy that now exists.
