2.4 MB 03-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

Author(s): Jebb, Stanley
Module version: 1.0
Description:
Do you enjoy reading other people's correspondence, especially the letters of famous people?  This book explores two of the great Apostle Paul's earliest epistles, those to the Thessalonian church.  In them he bares his heart to reveal his love for those he led to Christ, and his concern for their welfare, as he provides instructions to new Christians.  We also learn something of his travelling companions, his hopes and fears, his personal concerns, his passionate concern for the truth, and much about the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Read this book to learn how to live the Christian life, how to avoid false doctrine, and how the Thessalonians' zeal and the Apostle's teaching can be applied to your own life.

About the Author:

Stanley Jebb was born in Sheffield, brought up to attend church and Sunday School, and came into assurance of salvation in his late teens at Birmingham Youth for Christ, immediately getting involved in the National Young Life Campaign. Shortly afterwards he became a Local Preacher and served in that capacity for seven years before attending the Bible Training Institute in Glasgow. He went on to further training and gained the BA in Theology from Bristol University, The BD from London University, the PGCE from the London Institute of Education, and the ThD from Trinity Theological Seminary in the USA. He has pastored four Baptist churches in Bristol, Porthcawl, Cradley and Dunstable, the last for 27 years. After 42 years in the pastorate he retired from full time ministry, and has continued to preach, lecture and write. He is married to Shirley and they have two daughters, one son, and nine grandchildren. His previous publication with Day One was No Laughing Matter, an examination of the ‘Toronto Blessing’.

Exploring THE BIBLE Acts, Church on the move  (Exploring Acts)
1.9 MB 24-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

Author(s): Williams, Peter
Module version: 1.0
Description:
The early church really was a church on the move. It was dynamic and exhilarating and there really was a sense of things happening. There were, undoubtedly, dangerous and challenging times for the early Christians, but they were exciting times as God's Holy Spirit was at work amongst the leaders and the ordinary people. While we may look back with longing to such days, God has called us to serve him with the gospel of his grace in our own day, and we may do so with the help of such instruction as is to be found in this book.

About the Author:

Peter Williams is a Welshman from the town of Neath in South Wales. He is a graduate of the University of Wales and has degrees in theology and philosophy. He has served churches in England and Wales and has continued a preaching ministry since his retirement in 1997, now exercising oversight at Southbourne Evangelical Church in Bournemouth, England. He is author of several other books also published by Day One, including Opening up 2 Timothy and Opening up Ezra. He and his wife, Brenda, have a son, daughter, and three grandsons.

Exploring THE BIBLE Deuteronomy  (Exploring Deuteronomy)
    2.7 MB 05-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Brown, Paul. E
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
Deuteronomy can seem rather formidable at first sight, but it is actually one of the most important books in the Old Testament. It consists almost entirely of words spoken by Moses to the people of Israel as they camp in the plains of Moab next to the river Jordan with the promised land awaiting them on the opposite bank. These are God's people, whom he has taken into covenant with himself. Moses urges them to go forward by faith into the land that God has set before them. He tells them God's laws and commandments for their new life in the land, weaving his instructions around the principles enshrined in the Ten Commandments.

In this commentary, Paul Brown demonstrates the sometimes surprising relevance of the regulations of Deuteronomy for the churches and the lives of Christian people today. But such relevance is only to be expected, for God is always the same and all his Word, rightly understood, is profitable to lead us to his grace and to guide us in our living.

    About the Author:

Paul E. Brown lives near Lancaster, England. He retired after forty-two years in pastoral ministry: first in Southampton (as an assistant pastor), and then in Stoke-on-Trent and Dunstable. For many years he contributed to and edited Go Teach and Grace magazine. He has authored several books, most recently editing Homosexuality: Christian Truth and Love for Day One. He studied at the colleges now named the London School of Theology and Wales Evangelical School of Theology. He is married to Mary, and they have three children and seven grandchildren.

Exploring THE BIBLE Ecclesiastes  (Exploring Ecclesiastes)
    1.2 MB 06-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): LeFebvre, Michael
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
This volume is a fresh—and refreshing—exploration of the theme of joy from the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes. Contrary to typical approaches which treat Ecclesiastes as a book of despair, this study brings out its message about robust joy that perseveres despite life’s vanities. Structured as a devotional commentary, this book will prove edifying for personal or small-group Bible study. It will also be valuable for youth-group leaders mentoring young people through the dilemmas of post modernity, and for pastors preparing to preach from Ecclesiastes.

    Commendations

'As a first-rate pastor theologian, Michael leads us through this hard–to-understand book with both scholarly heft and pastoral verve. This is devotional Commentary writing at its best! I highly recommend it to pastors and preachers, students and scholars alike!'

Dr Todd Wilson, Senior Pastor of Calvary Memorial Church, Oak Park, Illinois, and Chairman of the Board for the Center for Pastor Theologians

    'Highly recommended!'

Exploring THE BIBLE Esther  (Exploring Esther)
    1.3 MB 12-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Jones, Colin. D
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
The study of the providence of God is both exciting and profitable: it thrills our hearts as we see the wisdom and power of our Heavenly Father; it strengthens our resolve as we marvel at the sufficiency of his grace; and it brings comfort when we do not understand what is happening to us or around us. Esther is all about that marvellous providence. Studying it can deepen our trust, enrich our worship, and intensify our love for our great God. It will reassure us that though we may not always see him, he never looses sight of us. The history of Esther is one of the clearest examples of Paul's great assertion in Romans 8:28: 'We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.'

Exploring THE BIBLE Genesis, From Eden to Egypt  (Exploring Genesis)
    2.1 MB 23-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Williams, Peter
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
Genesis comes first in the biblical canon and arguably forms the foundation for understanding the rest of the Bible. Its great narratives of the patriarchs and exciting stories capture the imagination of the youngest reader, and its great themes, like Creation, the Fall and the Flood, help answer many questions. Important issues are all dealt with ably but this is not a technical commentary; the author's main concern is with the spiritual purpose of the book, and he draws out those profound truths which still apply to God's people today.

Exploring THE BIBLE Habakkuk  (Exploring Habakkuk)
    1.3 MB 25-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Shenton, Tim
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
Why does a righteous and sovereign God tolerate wrongdoing? How are the divine attributes reconciled with the triumph of the godless? Why do the wicked prosper and rule over the righteous? Why does God raise up 'ruthless and impetuous' nations to execute judgement on his own people? These are some of the questions that perplexed Habakkuk, challenged his faith and caused him to question God's government of the world. And these are some of the questions that still perplex Christians today. Tim Shenton helpfully addresses these points in a clear and substantial exposition of the text of Habakkuk.

I’m very glad this concise gem is on my shelf – it aims to explain each verse of the much-neglected book of Habakkuk and succeeds with superb clarity. This book would prove useful to most readers, since it lends itself to being used as a succinct, non-technical reference to the meaning of this unusual dialogue between God and his puzzled prophet. The author makes many salient links with the rest of Scripture, and excels in opening our eyes to the pictures being painted by the rich word-imagery. Look here for a commentary that combines great brevity with attention to each verse. The message of a just and sovereign God who will ‘in wrath remember mercy’ rings loud and clear, and will bring comfort and strength to many. – Ben Epps (Evangelical Times)

It is an interesting, informative and well written commentary. – Peter Murcott

He has written twenty books, and researched extensively on church history, specializing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Exploring THE BIBLE Haggai  (Exploring Haggai)
    1.4 MB 07-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Shenton, Tim
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
A selfish disregard for the purpose of God is all too common among Christian people who live in 'panelled houses' while God's house 'remains a ruin'. As in the days of Haggai, excuses for apathy are shamelessly voiced, blind eyes are turned to the judgements of God, and defiled hearts sink into unfaithfulness. And yet the LORD Almighty remains faithful to his people and true to his word. Through repeated trials he calls the backslider to repentance, with timely encouragements and gracious promises he strengthens the downhearted, and for his own glory he transforms the sins of neglect and ignorance into the servants of his purpose.

With urgency the prophet condemns the wickedness of waiting for the 'right' time when duty calls today, and of lamenting the past desiring an experience today similar to that of yesterday. And he warns of the grave peril of expecting immediate material results. It is a message that must be taken seriously by the twenty-first century church.

A helpful book. – John Benton (Evangelicals Now)

A useful guide. This volume is certainly recommended for those preparing messages and for Bible students. The format of the book and the easy style of Mr Shenton’s writing make it readable and accessible to anyone wanting to understand this less-well known Old Testament book. – Martin Leech (Grace Magazine)

This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Williams, Peter
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
Author Peter Williams accepts that Job was a historical figure who faced up to real problems about his own suffering, about God's Justice and Government, and about the malignancy of evil in the world. Job is probably one of the world's oldest books and certainly not the easiest to understand, but it conveys some very powerful lessons for today. The author believes that we would greatly benefit by learning from this great man something of the meaning of victory over personal affliction, and the triumph of true faith in Almighty God.

Exploring THE BIBLE Joshua  (Exploring Joshua)

This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Peckham, Colin. N
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
    Joshua - what a book!
It is a necessary bridge between the Law of Moses and the rest of Israel's history. It magnifies the faithfulness and power of God.
It runs from the epic crossing of the Jordan to the final conquest of the land, this being seen as a vivid and graphic picture of claiming our rich inheritance in Christ. It shows that they could only get into the land of victory and fullness through crossing Jordan, the 'river of death', this being a picture of our dying with Christ and rising with him to a new and abundant resurrection life. It reveals the reasons for their failures and shows obedience and faith to be the basis for their victories.
Joshua is a very important book in the canon of Scripture and this devotional commentary merits your attention. It will challenge you with penetrating insights into Scripture and into your own heart. That in essence is its objective to confront men and women with the necessity of integrity, purity and victory through obedience and faith.

Exploring THE BIBLE Nahum and Obadiah  (Exploring Nahum and Obadiah)
    1.1 MB 30-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Shenton, Tim
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
    Nahum

Approximately one hundred years after Jonah preached to the citizens of Nineveh to turn 'from their evil ways' and escape imminent judgement, God commissioned Nahum to prophesy the city's complete destruction. At the time of his 'burden', the Assyrian Empire was both strong and wealthy, yet Nahum prophesied that soon the entire kingdom would be crushed forever under the power of God's wrath.

From the opening sentence: 'The LORD is a jealous and avenging God filled with wrath' to the poignant conclusion: 'Nothing can heal your wound; your injury is fatal', the fury, the omnipotence, the righteousness, the faithfulness of God are strikingly portrayed. Nineveh will fall, not because of the might of other nations, but because the Holy One of Israel 'takes vengeance on his foes'.

    Obadiah

Obadiah's prophecy unveils God's sovereignty over all nations and events, and gives an example of his direct intervention in the political and military affairs of human history. The Sovereign LORD does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: 'What have you done?'

It is the God of history who summons and equips the nations to destroy the Edomites for their arrogance and violence against their brother Jacob. It is the Judge and Ruler of mankind who gives the Edomites no hope of salvation. It is 'the great King over all the earth' who, in accordance with his everlasting covenant, delivers the house of Jacob from their enemies and reunites them with their northern brothers.

Both prophecies are a revelation of God's character and his moral government of the world - a revelation that contains a message of hope, comfort and encouragement for every Christian: 'THE LORD REIGNS FOR EVER'! It matters not how many nations oppose his rule or oppress his people; it makes no difference how many spiritual forces of evil ally themselves for his dethronement, for the Lord's purposes will prevail. All that he has promised will be fulfilled. He is in control. His dominion is an eternal dominion

An excellent verse by verse (almost word by word) commentary, based on NIV. Helpfully trustworthy. – Clifford Pond (Evangelicals Now)

    1.3 MB 26-Sep-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Field, David
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:
It is said that 'the best things come in small packages' and certainly the book of Obadiah bears that out. Weighing in at just twenty-one verses, it is packed full with good things: rich theology, powerful imagery, unsettling challenges to our thinking and living, and huge promise for the triumph of God's purposes. Obadiah uses key biblical themes such as mountains and brothers, the kingdom of God and the day of the Lord; he challenges his hearers and readers by what he says about malice, pride and complacency; he encourages God's people with the promise of their sure inheritance; and he raises wider matters of justice, spiritual warfare and the international spread of the kingdom of God. Furthermore, like all the prophets, Obadiah over and over points us to the kindness and justice of the Lord Jesus Christ and to the greatness of what he has done for us.

    Description:
The Book of Ruth is not the longest of the books of the Bible—it contains only four chapters of text. Yet its significance is immense. Ruth was a young woman from Moab, who came to be part of the covenant community of God's people. Consequently, she is one of only a handful of women mentioned in the genealogy of Christ: she begins as a stranger to God's people, and ends up as a mother of God's Messiah.

This remarkable story is both an example and an illustration of how sinners like us can become partakers of God's covenant salvation. In Ruth's story, God's grace worked in her life, bringing her from a place where she was far away from God, into an inheritance of covenant blessing. And just as she found her rest and satisfaction in her marriage to her redeemer, Boaz, so we find ours through union with the great Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ. Read the story of Ruth—and let the power of God's amazing grace grip your soul!

    Author(s): Arthur, J. Philip

    Description:
The temporary disciple seems to be a common feature of today's church. Someone who began well no longer attends church and no longer associates with Christian people. That is why the message of the epistle to the Hebrews is especially appropriate for today. Originally addressed to people who were considering going back on their profession of faith in Christ, it encourages them to persevere by holding up Jesus Christ before them. In this accessible commentary Philip Arthur unpacks Hebrews' compelling message for today's Christians. Phil Arthur studied History at Cambridge. He has been pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Lancaster, since 1988. He and his wife, Barbara, have three grown-up sons.

    Author(s): McIntosh, Andy
    Module version: 1.0
Description: In this commentary, Andy McIntosh considers the most attacked part, Genesis 1–11, which is the major historical timeline from the creation of the universe through Adam to Noah, and on through the worldwide Flood to Abraham.

    Endorsements

Perhaps the most concise, clear and credible explanation of the first eleven chapters of the foundational book of the Christian faith. Andy McIntosh expertly shows how the text should be understood and the serious results if it is incorrectly interpreted. In addition, he applies the narrative to our day and the gospel. A significant and valuable study against the Christian scepticism of many commentators today.
Brian Edwards, author, lecturer and former pastor

In this profoundly helpful commentary on the opening chapters of the Bible, Professor McIntosh allows the Scriptures to interrogate the prevailing sophistry of our age. He writes simply under the banner of the perspicuity of Scripture as he engages with other commentators irenically but firmly. With his own formidable scientific knowledge he exposes the evolutionary pseudo-science which plagues our children’s classrooms. Above all, he shows how these eleven chapters shine the spotlight on the coming Christ and how undermining their objective truth shatters the foundations of all Christian doctrine. For the strengthening of your faith, examine Genesis 1–11 with Andy McIntosh!
Irving Steggles, pastor of Birchleigh Baptist Church, Kempton Park, Johannesburg, South Africa

It is refreshing to read a commentary on Genesis 1–11 that defends the chapters as literal history because that is clearly how God intended the chapters to be read. Professor McIntosh shows how the New Testament fully supports a literal interpretation of Genesis 1–11. The commentary will help Christians to have a better appreciation of God’s work in creation and redemption.
Professor Stuart Burgess BSc (Eng), PhD, CEng, FIMechE, creation speaker and writer

It is a sure sign of the current crisis in Western Christianity that it has become exceptional, rather than normal, for Christian scientists of repute to be creationists—that is, to believe in the reliability and inerrancy of Genesis 1–11 without crossing their fingers behind their back! It is therefore very encouraging that Prof. Andy McIntosh is such a scientist and such a Christian. Here is a thoroughly helpful and accessible guide to Genesis 1–11 which brings into clear focus both the teaching of this passage and its scientific implications.
Roger Fay, pastor of Zion Evangelical Baptist Church, Ripon, and editor of Evangelical Times

Andy McIntosh brings together his expertise in science and the study of Holy Scripture in this readable and thought-provoking commentary. Christians discouraged by attacks on the biblical doctrine of creation will find this book to be informative, helpful, and more than a few breaths of fresh air.

Hebrews a verse by verse commentary by John Cook  (Hebrews John Cook)
    1.6 MB 30-Oct-2020
This is a paid module and requires an unlock key to be used.

    Author(s): Cook, John
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:

Hebrews, a verse by verse commentary, by John Cook.

John Cook was a true son of Texas. Born here in 1954, John grew up in a Christian family and was riding bulls in rodeos while still in high school. After graduation, John honorably served in the Army, in both South Korea and Germany. Following his enlistment in the Army, John returned to Texas, got married and moved to Oklahoma to work in the oil fields while raising a family.

John Cook was also a true, born again, child of God. He and his wife Pam raised their children in the church and it was during this period of his life that John started questioning some of the teachings coming from the pulpit in his church.

However, he did not feel qualified to debate these teachings with the pastor. This was when he decided it was time to go to Bible college.

John arrived at Tyndale Theological Seminary and Biblical Institute about six months after I did. As students, sharing many of the same classes, and as members of Seminary Bible Fellowship Church (later renamed Tyndale Bible Church), we quickly became friends. Little did we know that, together, we would pursue bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.

Throughout our course of studies, John took particular interest in the biblical languages and Latin. Tyndale has always emphasized the study of the original biblical languages: Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, but John pursued additional studies past those required by his program, eventually taking, I believe, every language course offered, including those from guest lecturers.

His greatest love was biblical Greek, and during his course of studies, John started working at Tyndale as the school Registrar. After graduation he began teaching Greek and Theology to undergraduate, graduate, and seminary level students.

John rose to become Vice President of Tyndale Theological Seminary and, to help our educational efforts, moved with his wife, Pam, to Louisiana, where he established and oversaw a branch campus of Tyndale for a few years before he retired. He came back to Texas, but our Lord saw fit to take our brother to his heavenly home at the young age of 58.

It was during his years at Tyndale that John wrote this commentary on the book of Hebrews. Even to an excellent Greek exegete like John, the book of Hebrews presents its challenges, not the least of which is deciding on who the author was and to whom it was written: unsaved Jews, saved Jews, or a combination of both.

These were the types of challenges that John liked the most, and in this volume you will find an excellent commentary, worthy of your time, written by my friend and colleague, whom I look forward to seeing again!

    Patrick E. Belvill

    Hurst, Texas

“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” Heb. 13:20-21

John Cook (1954-2012) was Vice President of Tyndale Theological Seminary and Biblical Institute and a Professor of Greek and Theology. He received his Bachelors (Dip.Th.S.), from Tyndale Biblical Institute and his Masters (M.T.S.), and Doctor of Theology (Th.D.), degrees from Louisiana Baptist Theological Seminary.

The comments are intended to help you study the Bible personally. The Bible quotations are written in full and are taken from the New American Standard Bible-NASB 1995, with permission.

The comments on Job, Psalms and Isaiah are written together with Tony Jonathan. The comment on Ezekiel is written in close collaboration with Ron Vellekoop.

The Bible is the infallible, everlasting Word of God. The Bible is about the Son of God, Who became Man to die on the cross for sinful people. God raised Him from the dead and He is now in heaven. Anyone who confesses his sins and believes in the Son and His work of atonement on the cross will not perish but receive eternal life. Such a person is a child of God. God tells His children in His Word how to live to His glory and all that He intends to give them, because of their connection to His Son.

About the Author Ger de Koning

Born in the Netherlands in 1948, born again in 1966. Sport was my passion. That it was also for some time after my conversion, until, about 1970, I saw the Lord Jesus had a right on my whole life. Since that full surrender the Lord Jesus Christ and the Word of God are my passion. Reading and studying God's Word gave me a deep desire to preach and share God’s Word both in teaching the believers to the edification of the church of God, with an especial care for young believers and in the preaching of the gospel to unbelievers.

This resulted in the writing of simple but not superficial exegesis of all the books of the Bible as well as on different Biblical topics. Of them a lot are translated in other languages. Further, there are a lot of opportunities to teach the Word of God in addresses, Bible readings and on conferences in the Netherlands and abroad.

The Lord has given me a wife, Willy, who is a great help to me. Without her I wouldn’t be able to do this work. We married in 1975. The Lord gave us six children and twenty-one grandchildren.

The whole Bible is a splendid book and it’s my prayer that you’ll get this impression in an increasing way.

    I wish you God’s blessing!

But the books of 1 and 2 Samuel, where they are recorded, are among the most difficult books in the Bible. The Hebrew text is widely considered corrupt and sometimes even unintelligible. The social and religious customs are strange and seem to diverge from the tradition of Moses. In this first part of an ambitious two-volume commentary on the books of Samuel, David Toshio Tsumura sheds considerable light on the background of 1 Samuel, looking carefully at the Philistine and Canaanite cultures, as he untangles the difficult Hebrew text.

Ecclesiastes is one of the most fascinating—and hauntingly familiar—books of the Old Testament. Author(s): Longman III, Tremper
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:

Relationships are a wonderful, mysterious, often elusive, sometimes painful part of the human experience. The most intimate of all human relationships, according to the Bible, is that between a husband and a wife. It is no surprise, therefore, that there is a book of the Bible, the Song of Songs, that focuses on this relationship. What is surprising is how little attention is given to the Song of Songs by scholars, by the church, and by readers of the Bible. With this volume Tremper Longman III unpacks for modern people what this ancient love poem says about the male-female relationship—and, by analogy, about God’s love for his people.

    Author(s): Allen, Leslie C.
    Module version: 1.0
    Description:

The eloquent and uncompromising calls for social righteousness by some of the Minor Prophets are familiar to many, yet the writings themselves are probably the least studied and least known texts of the Old Testament. Those who are familiar with these books are also aware of the historical and literary problems that plague their study. Drawing on insights from various perspectives—theological, historical, and literary—Leslie Allen’s commentary on Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah carefully and imaginatively reconstructs the stage on which the message of these four books was conveyed to their Hebrew hearers and shows what relevance, in turn, they hold for contemporary Christians.

    Description:

The close-knit bond between prophecy and history, according to O. Palmer Robertson, becomes particularly clear through the study of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah. As the historical context of their messages is explored, it becomes ever more apparent that biblical history—in addition to providing the context for prophecy—actually embodies and functions as prophecy. The events that occurred to Judah and its neighbors spoke in anticipation of world-shaking circumstances that were yet to come.

    Description:

“It is a special pleasure to introduce R. T. (Dick) France’s commentary to the pastoral and scholarly community, who should find it a truly exceptional—and helpful—volume.” So says Gordon Fee in his preface to this work. France’s masterful commentary on Matthew focuses on exegesis of Matthew’s text as it stands rather than on the prehistory of the material or details of Synoptic comparison. The exegesis of each section is part of a planned literary whole supplemented, rather than controlled, by verse-by-verse commentary, allowing the text as a complete story to come into brilliant focus.

The Gospel of Mark is significant in many ways. Not only was it the first Gospel to be written and an important literary source for Matthew and Luke, but it is also best characterized as a witness document, a proclamation of salvation through Jesus Christ, which received its creative impulse from the early apostolic preaching. Mark bears witness to the word of revelation that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.

Fee reveals the logic of each argument or narrative before moving on to the details of each verse, and he concludes each section with a theological-practical reflection on the meaning of the text today. Among other things, Fee explores the occasion for writing for each epistle, restoring 2 Thessalonians to the place it deserves as a full companion to the first letter, rather than merely a tagalong to 1 Thessalonians.

    Reviews

"No matter how full his library may be, nor how empty his pocket-book, the minister who sees this work will want it." — Observer.

"It promises to be the most useful cyclopedia for ministers issued as yet." — Christian.

"Every volume is profusely treated and explained verse by verse, with apposite, varied and suggestive extracts from a vast number of ancient and modern authors. The meaning of words, the lessons deducible from the text, the doctrine it teaches, the duty it enjoins, pithy remarks of commentators and other writers upon it, and anecdotes with which to enforce its teachings follow each verse. . . The author has put the condensed substance of many commentaries in one, giving the results reached by many learned experts." — Methodist Review.

"There is little or no exposition, properly so called, but an abun dant citation of the opinions of men called forth by the inspired writers. In this respect the book is unique." — Christian Intelligencer

"Mr. Exell here devotes more than 500 closely printed pages to one short epistle of six chapters. He has gathered together a vast quantity of sermonoutlines, anecdotes and illustrations of all kinds, intended to aid in the exposition of the Epistle to the Galatians. This kind of labour-saving apparatus ... is undoubtedly very popular at present, and, if wisely used, may be very serviceable, particularly to lay-preachers and Sunday-school teachers. If such work is to be attempted, it is at least carefully and well done by Mr. Exell. He has laid under contribution writers of all kinds, and inserts extracts of all sizes, sometimes consisting only of a line or two, sometimes extending to more than a page. The comments are judiciously chosen, generally from evangelical writers, and, for the most part, those of this century. There is a great mass of information in the volume on the letter to the Ephesians, which will be exceedingly useful to all who make it a foundation for personal research and study. The best commentaries and sermons on the epistle have been laid under contribution; anecdotes and illustrations culled from all sources are here ready to hand for the preacher and teacher. The work has been skilfully done, and, properly used, will be of great service." —London Quarterly Review

Student's Guide to New Testament Textual Variants, A  (TCC)
    0.8 MB 04-Jun-2017
    Author(s): Terry, Bruce
    Module version: 1.10
Description: A Student's Guide in Textual Criticism by Bruce Terry.
Variant Texts of the New testament are listed and compared and commented by Bruce Terry.

    Preface
In 1984 while working on the third draft for the New Analytical Version, I realized that the average student of the Bible had no resource available to him to help him understand all the textual footnotes that are found in the several modern translations of the Bible. For those who read Greek, the United Bible Societies have published Bruce Metzger's excellent book, A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament. But for the person who does not read Greek, textual criticism is a mystery about which little has been written. To be sure, one cannot engage in textual criticism of the New Testament without a knowledge of Greek. But many aspects of this discipline can be understood by the average person even without a knowledge of Greek. It is for these people that this book is written. The textual footnotes of modern translations seem to follow no set pattern--one version may say that a reading is found in late manuscripts while another version says that the same reading is found in early manuscripts. In this book the reader can find more information on the subject. Indeed, in this volume he can begin to see for himself the fallacy of two modern myths of textual criticism: the constant superiority of the "best and most reliable witnesses" and the constant superiority of the majority of the manuscripts. Perhaps if for the common man this volume sheds a little light on a difficult subject so that he understands that there is no simple answer, this work will have filled a purpose. Hopefully this book will not breed more controversy, but will bring more understanding that will help to calm the spirit of controversy that now exists.

The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, Enhanced and Expanded

This edition of Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (TSKe) is a newly enhanced and expanded edition of this valuable resource. Of all the commentaries, notes, outlines, etc. that have been printed as aids to Bible study and research, this resource is arguably the most valuable; it allows the Bible to explain and interpret itself. The Bible is its own best interpreter, and the Bible Analyzer TSKe module reveals the most relevant cross-references of any verse with a single mouse-click.

The Lord allowed us at BibleAnalyzer.com to greatly expanded the standard TSK primarily by,
    • Making Essentially All Cross-References Reciprocal
    • Adding Reference Headings to Reciprocal References
    • Adding References to Verses that Previously had None
    • Correcting Malformed and Orphaned References
    • and More.

By reciprocal references we mean references that mutually refer to each other.

Here are a few details of the changes:

    Original TSK TSK Expanded
    Total References 381,775 670,558 288,783 More References!
    Verses with References 29,648 30,593 945 More Verses !
    Reference Headings 66,291 356,007 289,716 More (w/Reciprocals)!
Verses with Reciprocals 1675 28,963 27,288 More Verses!

Apart from the Authorized Version of the Bible itself and a good English Dictionary, we believe the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, Enhanced is the most valuable Bible study resource one can posses.

About The Original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is a tool for interpreting Scripture with Scripture. Each verse of the Bible is cross-referenced to several others to enable the reader to gain a true sense of each word and phrase as it is used in the Bible. There are over 500,000 (actually 382,000) cross-references, listing verses that illustrate how words and phrases are used elsewhere in the Bible. This valuable resource greatly aids the reader in interpreting Scripture with Scripture. It contains brief chapter summaries with dates and other notes. Originally printed in a 700+ page book, the entire reference is available within this module. With a single click next to any verse in the Bible, you have instant access to the most exhaustive cross-reference list available.

Going through the Scriptures with the aid of The Treasury will enable the reader, better than all the commentaries, to come to a true knowledge of God's meaning. As has been said, "There is no other commentary on the Bible so helpful as the Bible itself." There is not a difficult passage in the Bible that is not explained and made clear by other passages of the Bible, and this book is marvelously useful in bringing to light those other parts of the Bible that throw light upon the portion that is being studied.

"...The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge enables one, not only to understand the Word, but to feed upon the Word."
    R. A. Torrey, from the Introduction.

Variant Readings of the New Testament  (VarNT)
    3.7 MB 19-Apr-2020
    Module version: 1.1
    Description:

This module gives the main variant readings of the Greek New Testament. Since there are thousands of manuscripts of the NT, it is natural that there are differences between them, and it is not always easy to determine which was the original reading, even if the text of 99% of the verses is clear.

In this module, the variants of a verse, if they exist, are listed separated by an empty line. The text of the SBL Greek New Testament is always given first, and the alternative readings are on the following lines. Every reading is followed by the witnesses, that is the manuscripts that contain it.

The order for the witnesses is: papyri, uncials, families, minuscules, lectionaries, ancient versions, fathers, editions, and Italian translations.

The same variants can be consulted on-line, and displayed in different ways, here (laparola.net).

    Inleiding

Sport was mijn passie.
